In last week’s content, I was already commenting on Inflection AI, the company co-founded, among others, by Mustafa Suleyman.
In today’s content, I wanted to dig deeper into this company and especially test their Chatbot Pi to understand where we are heading in the personal assistant arena.
Inflection AI
It is an artificial intelligence company founded in 2022 by Mustafa Suleyman (co-founder of Google DeepMind and one-time executive of OpenAi) and Reid Hoffman (co-founder of LinkedIn). The company is based in Palo Alto, California, and describes itself as an “AI studio” that specializes in creating personal AI assistants.
Inflection AI’s mission is to make personal AI assistants available to everyone in the world. The company is structured as a public benefit corporation, which means that it has a legal mandate to prioritizing the well-being and happiness of its users and stakeholders above all else.
Inflection AI has developed one of the most sophisticated language models on the market, which allows people to interact with their personal assistant, “Pi”, in a simple, natural way and receive relevant and useful information and advice.
The company has raised $1.525 billion in funding, including $1.3 billion in a funding round led by investors including Microsoft, Reid Hoffman, Bill Gates, and Eric Schmidt. This funding will be used to continue the development and deployment of Inflection AI products.
How is inflection AI different from other artificial intelligence companies?
- Focus on Personal Assistants: Inflection AI stands out for its focus on creating AI personal assistants, such as the Pi chatbot. Unlike other companies that focus on different AI applications, Inflection AI specializes in developing AI assistants that can interact with users in a friendly and personalized way.
- Proprietary Language Model: Inflection AI differentiates itself by basing its technology on an internally developed language rather than relying on third-party language models. This gives its products, such as Inflection Pi, more natural and user-friendly responses, according to the company.
- Strategic Partnerships: Inflection AI has established partnerships with leading companies such as Microsoft and Nvidia, which supports and strengthens its position in the field of artificial intelligence. These strategic partnerships provide Inflection AI with access to cutting-edge resources and technologies to further innovate its product development.
- Emphasis on Personalization and Kindness: Inflection Pi stands out for its focus on being a “kind and caring” AI, designed to help users process thoughts and feelings. Although the chatbot cannot sense emotions, its ability to provide emotional support and personalized assistance sets it apart from other more conventional AI models
About PI
Pi was created to offer people a new way to express themselves, share their curiosities, explore new ideas, and experience a personal AI of confidence.
Pi stands for “personal intelligence” because it can provide infinite knowledge based on a person’s unique interests and needs. Pi is a teacher, coach, confidant, creative partner, and idea board. It is continuously being updated with new features and improvements.
At the moment it is only available in English language but the company is working on improving its multilingual capabilities so we hope it will soon be available in other languages such as Spanish for example.
The use of Pi is undoubtedly very relevant, according to data provided by the company itself. It is interesting to see the statistics on the duration of conversations, with an average of more than half an hour and 10% of sessions lasting more than 1 hour!
You can talk to Pi on various platforms and continue the conversation whenever and wherever you want. It’s free and pou can try it out at
- Web: talk to Pi at pi.ai.
- Mobile: download Pi, your personal AI for iPhone or iPad.
- WhatsApp and SMS: add +1 (314) 333-1111 to your contacts to send messages to Pi.
- Instagram: follow @heypi.ai and click here to send Pi a direct message.
- Facebook Messenger: click here to contact Pi.
The LLM Model behind PI
Inflection AI’s model, Pi, may have outperformed two popular alternatives developed by Google and Meta and is very close in performance to OpenAI’s GPT-4 model, which is considered one of the most advanced models on the market.
In comparative tests of school—and professional-level tasks, Inflection AI’s model, Inflection-2, outperformed several prominent models, including the larger version of LLaMA 2, xAI’s (Elon Musk) Grok-1, Google’s PaLM 2 Large, and Anthropic’s Claude 2. It fell only behind OpenAI’s GPT-4 model.
In March of this year they released version 2.5 with performance very close to GPT-4. Here is a comparison with OpenAi’s LLM.
My experience with the platform
I have used Pi through its iOS app and the first impression was to see a very simple and friendly interface as you can see in this image, but the “magic” happens when you use the voice interface.
In one of my interactions with Pi, I asked him to call me Salva, and from then on, the system addressed me this way.
I have been very surprised by the ability to store the context of our conversations so this is permanent. This makes it much easier to interact and pick up on conversations held in previous sessions.
As an example, it is better than a button; here is a conversation I had with Pi . It is in English because the capabilities of the bot in Spanish are still very limited. Sorry for my English 🙂
The truth is that it is fascinating and gives us a glimpse of what interactions with personal assistants will be like in the near future. Imagine adding to these conversation capabilities others like the ones we have seen in previous contents to manage calendars, suggest changes due to agenda conflicts, provide reminders of all kinds, or even plan a vacation or buy any product based on a simple conversation…
Good week!
